Oldie Review: Small Island

Amazing. Amazing. Despite all of the Andrew Davies-directed Jane Austen miniseries we’ve watched, Small Island still amazes us with how moving it is.

Our thoughts:

  • The musical score fit in perfectly with the pace of the show. The music is actually partly what made the emotional scenes have even more impact.
  • The voice-overs were flawlessly done. When watching, it made us feel like we were reading the book and watching simultaneously. Plus, it makes us want to go to the library right now and get the book.
  • “I am not like that slave girl from Gone with the Wind!” Hortense was hilarious at times.
  • WHY DID QUEENIE AND HORTENSE NEVER FIND OUT ABOUT MICHAEL? How is it possible that the subject of who baby Michael’s father was never came up? How is it possible that Hortense never asked Queenie about where baby Michael’s name came from?
  • On that note, the ending sucked. SUCKED. Why is it that after such an emotional 3 hours, all the writers decided to give us was a grown-up baby Michael in the present day looking through a photo album?
